McCain, Obama, or Mr. Earl?...

We have been learning a lot about elections and presidents the last few weeks leading up to today's election. The school participated in a mock election yesterday. The results were Obama won. The students have been really excited and couldn't wait to cast their vote. The pictures taken above are part of the election packet. I took the students up after they voted and took their pictures by McCain, Obama, and Mr. Earl. Note: Mr. Earl is not running for president. He is the spokesperson for the school mall program. The information was sent home Monday and those need to be returned by Friday.
We learned some interesting facts about past presidents. Did you know that Eisenhower was a football coach? L. Johnson was a school principal. J.Q. Adams, Fillmore, and Garfield were teachers. Abraham Lincoln was a postmaster. J.F.K.'s favorite book was James Bond. Nixon's favorite song was "Home on the Range". Calvin Coolidge had a pet donkey. Buchanan was a boxer. These are just a few of the many facts we learned about past presidents. The students really seemed to enjoy learning about the election and the presidents.

Catch Up...

I want to apologize for not being able to update the blog. I am currently having some computer problems. It is not posting like I set it up to. I hope it will post on the blog though. We have had a lot happen since I was last able to post. We have had our Second Grade Music Program, Parent/Teacher Conferences, Pumpkin Contest, and our Fall Festival Party. I am going to try and post all of the pictures but as you can tell from above they are not posting in order. I will start with the Music program we had great attendance. I want to thank you for supporting this opportunity to let your children shine. I tried to get everyone's picture but Ms. G. had to pull some to get ready for their parts and I couldn't get them all. They did a FANTASTIC job!!! We had a wonderful turn out for the parent/teacher conferences. I was able to meet with 18/20 parents. I can not thank you enough for working with me to make this the best second grade year they could possibly have. We also had our annual pumpkin decorating contest. Tristan won first place with his bat from Bats at the Library. We had a tie for second place Seylor with her Frankenstein and Quentin with his Darth Mol. There were 13 entries. I have never had that many entries. The pumpkins were fabulous. We had a class election to vote on the pumpkins. We also had our Fall Festival Party last Friday. The students behaved really well and we had a lot of fun. There costumes were adorable. I would like to thank the parents for coming and helping out. Savanna received the award for Student of the Month for the month of October. I am going to try to get the rest of the pictures to post in another post. They are not posting in order though.

Visit from P.C. and Muscular Verbs

Visit from P.C.
P.C. dancing (sorry the lighting is not good)
Students showing their muscles and their muscular verbs.
Muscular verb list

We had a visitor come to our school on Tuesday. P.C. the drug and alcohol awareness car came to speak to the students about staying away from drugs and alcohol. In Writing this week we learned about muscular verbs. Muscular verbs are action words that truly describe the action.
Ex: The boy stepped over the water. (regular verb: stepped)
The boy leapt over the water. (muscular verb: leapt)
We read the book Stellaluna because it had a lot of muscular verbs such as clambered, murmured, gasped and many more. The students then brainstormed and came up with more muscular verbs. The list is pictured above. They came up with some really terrific muscular verbs.

I also want to brag on them. We didn't have anyone turn a card this past week. I am VERY VERY proud of them!!!! I tried a new seating arrangement and it is really working well.
